Ellen DeGeneres, Alicia Keys Give Black Teen Suspended for Dreadlocks a $20,000 Scholarship

Teen Told to Cut Hair Receives $20K Scholarship From Ellen DeGeneres DeAndre Arnold is a black teen from Texas. He has been in the news for refusing to cut his hair. He has dreadlocks and was told that his hair made him “out of dress code.” The twist of the story is he keeps his hair off of his shoulder and out of his face which is what the dress code states. Ellen pointed out that their are girls with long hair attending his school and they are not suspended. If DeAndre, who gets good grades, doesn’t cut his hair he won’t be allowed to return to school or graduate. He is currently suspended. Alicia Keys presented him with a $20,000 scholarship toward college. He wants to be a veterinarian. His school district is 3.1% African American. The school district has yet to comment.
