I know, I know who even knew the Globes were even being given out, right? Oddly enough, The Golden Globes weren’t aired on television, winners were announced via the Globes Instagram page. Honestly what’s odd to me isn’t that the ceremony was not held… it’s the lack of emphasis on why.

NBC decided against airing the program after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association; the organization that nominates and votes for the winners of the Golden Globes faced recent criticism for its lack of diversity among its members. Last February, the LA Times reported that out of the 87 members of the group none of them were black. Members have also been accused of taking gifts and trips provided by studios in exchange for preferential treatment and an overall existing culture of corruption.

By October, 21 new journalists had been added to the roster, “48 percent identify as women 29 percent identify as Black, 24 percent identify as Asian, 29 percent identify as Latinx, 19 percent identify as Middle Eastern/North Africa.” as reported by Variety.

By winning the best actor award, Smith will be a front runner for Best Actor at this year’s Academy Awards, which will be announced on February 8th.

Do you think these award shows are rigged??? Either way we’re rooting for you Will!
